Costs of Owning a Horse
Purchase price:
For a safe, sound horse, expect to pay upwards of $7,000. If you are willing to take one that is a bit more to handle, or needs more trainer, or has some age, a horse for less $ could possibly be found.
Want "more" horse, or one suitable for showing? Look around the $10,000 - $20,000 mark. The more $ the nicer the horse. Like anything, you get what you pay for, but you might not need a Ferrari to pull a boat!
Basic Monthly costs
- Stall $490-590**
- Insurance (to avoid those vet bills) $40-$100
- Maintenance vetting $30 (budgeted)
- Stable worming $25 (every 3 months)
- Shoeing $60-$140 (budgeted every 6-8 weeks)
- Vitamins/supplements $30-$100
- Lesson/training cost $200-$360 per month (Check out our Lease Back Program to offset training fees!)
Total cost per month: $660-$1200
Supplemental Feed (if your horse needs it, max. $25-$50/month)
**Bear in mind, finding a stall in Orange County is the real trick. BTS students will be given priority of BTS stalls, HOWEVER these stalls are for BTS students only. If you change trainers, you need to find another stall!
Other expenses
Cookies, Carrots, horse care products, tack, equipment, shows, clothes... oh it can go on and on... just like ANY sport!
